A short description of fedora core installation
This is a short description of the fedora core installation, for the common problems
i read from the fedora forums, you can read the fedora core installation guide in more details
from the fedora core official website installation guide.
If you want to dual boot the fedora core with windows first install the windows.
To install the fedora core you need the first three iso images, or better to get the all four iso
images, from your nearest fedora core mirrors or click here.
First of all check the iso images with sha1sum, in a linux terminale simply do:
sha1sum <file name>
windows users should download the digsum.zip, unzip and run the sha1sum in dos.
compare the ouput of sha1sum with SHA1SUM from the downloaded iso's website,
if they are the same, the iso's are not corrupt.
You have the choice to install the iso images from your local hard disk or burn
them to the cd's as images.
To begin, installation change the first boot device to cdrom, put the first cd, you
will get the boot prompt, if your video card is supported by linux and you have at least
256 mb RAM, you can continue with the graphical installation hit the enter to continue with,
with the graphical installation in the other case type linux text to enter the text installation.
also you can change to the installation from the network or hard drive with typing
linux askmethod in the boot prompt.
Language and keyboard configuration:
select the default language and the keyboard layout for your system, you can add aditional
languages later on in the next steps.
Select upgrade if you have the previous installation of fedora core and
want to keep your old configurations, if you want a fresh installation of fedora core, select
the new installation option.
you can do the media check to be sure if your cd's are not corrupt.
Installation type:
Here you should select the installation type, be aware of, fedora core don't have the
option to skip the packages, if from any reason your system can't read a file, your system
will reboot and you will lost all the installation process, to be safe better to choose the
workstation with it is defualt packages, after installation you can add all other packages
read the faqs.
you can select any installation type, if you want to install your selective packages or groups
of packages select the custom installation, later one you will be asked to select your packages.
Disk partitioning:
Disk partioning is for making the linux box, here is options for automaitc and
custom partition with disk druid.
if you select the automatic partition you have more options for to delete the previous
linux partitions, delete all partitions or only use the free space to create partitions,
automatic partition is apllied to the all hard disks.
Here is the short description for linux nomenclature of hard disks and partitions:
Primary master is /dev/hda or /dev/sda
Primary slave is /dev/hdb or /dev/sdb
Secondary master is /dev/hdc or /dev/sdc
Secondary slave is /dev/hdd or /dev/sdd
The first 3 partitons /dev/hda1,/dev/hda2 and /dev/hda3 are primary partitions, /dev/hda4 is
extended partion while /dev/hda5 is the first logical partition in the extended partitioin
and so on.
Custom partiton is for manually partitioning with disk druid, and is the best choice, select
the custom partition, one advantage of this option is, you can mount your windows partitions
and to access them from linux, this options is apllied only for fat file systems you cannot mount
the ntfs file systems in this point.
A Fedora Core system has at least three partitions:
- A data partition mounted at /boot (size 100 mb)
- A data partition mounted at / (size as you wish)
- A swap partition (size double of your RAM capacity)
You can make a fourth partition to save your important files, this partition can
be mount at /home or any other name you want, and this will be save from formatting in
the next installations.
You can delete or resize any existing windows or linux partitions to make free space for new partitions, to create new partitons select the free space click on create, wirte the mount
point, mention the apropriate size for the partition and select format as ex3 or any other
file system you want, swap partition dosen't have any mount point, select to format as swap.
to mount your windows partitions select the partition and click on edit, select the mount point
for example you can mount the C partiton at /win-c, then select the leave it unchanged.
Boot loader:
This step is to install the boot loader, boot loader is a tool booting your system
to linux and othe operating systems, without a boot loader you cannot boot to linux and others,
fedora core uses the grub boot loader,it is better for newbies to use the defualt boot loader
options, this will install the grub to the mbr and overrite the existing boot loader, windows
and linux will be automaticaly added to the dual boot and you can boot to windows or linux.
Other options is the advanced boot loader options, you can install the grub to the first sector
of your root partition, in this case you should use the another boot loader to boot the grub,
for example windows xp users can use the ntldr to boot to linux, for details read this link.
Network Configuration:
you can configrue your network here or leave the defualts and after installation you can
do it with cold mind.
Firewall:
Leave the firewall enabled, after installation you can set your rules apropriate for your
network, or more easy can use the other tools like shorewall to easily set the iptables rules
for your network configuration.
SELinux:
Select the defualt level for Selinux or as you wish.
Time Zone Selection:
Disable the UTC if you run wondows as well.
Set the Root Password:
Set the root password for you, be carefull if you forgot the pasword, you cannot login to
your fedora core system.
Package Selection:
Here you can select or deselect the packages for installation, if you have choosen the
workstation installation type continue with the defualt packages without any changes.
Or if your choice was custom type installation in the beginning, select your selective
packages or groups for the installation, in the bottom you have the option everything,
this will install the all packages, for everything at least you should have 8.7 Gb of
free space.
Additional Language Support:
Choose the addintional languages you want to install.
Click on next and continue to complete the rest of installation process.
